The Calgary Boomers were a professional soccer team which participated in the North American Soccer League (NASL) briefly for just one season in 1981. The team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, and shortly thereafter folded after having accumulated losses of over $2M. One interesting fact about the Boomers is they were owned by Nelson Skalbania, who was best known for signing 17 year old Wayne Gretzky to the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA.
