Conceived in the mid-1980s as Canada’s prospective franchise for the International Roller Skating League (IRSL), the Northern Knights were slated to bring banked-track professional roller derby back to the country with a distinctive national identity and striking scarlet and metallic silver uniforms. Promoted by skating legend Frank Macedo—who tabbed the team to be led by veteran talent including Francine Cochu—the franchise was heavily anticipated during a period when the sport enjoyed national television syndication across dozens of Canadian stations. However, despite generating great enthusiasm and concept illustrations among fans, the Northern Knights never officially hit the track for a regular-season game, as the IRSL ceased operations following its 1987 season, leaving the team as a fascinating "what-if" chapter of mid-80s roller derby history.
