The Baltimore Blades: Maryland's Historic Hockey Heritage

The Baltimore Blades originally entered the WHA as the Los Angeles Sharks (1972–1974) before relocating to become the Michigan Stags in Detroit for the start of the 1974–75 season. Due to severe financial distress, the league took control of the team in mid-season relocated them to Maryland on January 23, 1975, where they were rebranded as the Blades. Notable players for the franchise included leading scorer Gary Veneruzzo, assist-leader Jean-Paul LeBlanc, future NHLer Ed Johnstone, and the infamous enforcer Bill "Goldie" Goldthorpe. At the end of the 1974–75 season, the WHA contemplated a relocation to Seattle but ultimately chose to terminate the franchise completely.
