The Oakland Oaks were a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), beginning play in the 1967-68 season. The team played in the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum Arena, and after a dreadful initial season, won the ABA Championship in the 1968-69 season. The Oaks remarkable turnaround was spearheaded by F Rick Barry, who had sat out the previous season due to a contract dispute with the NBA's San Francisco Warriors. Despite their success, the team was sold and relocated to Washington, D.C., where they rebranded as the Washington Caps.
