San Francisco Golden Gaters Merch | WTT Tennis Team

The San Francisco Golden Gaters were a standout franchise in the original World Team Tennis (WTT) league, bringing high-energy professional tennis to the Bay Area from 1974 to 1978. Playing their home matches primarily at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena and the Cow Palace, the team became known for its passionate fanbase and highly competitive rosters. The Golden Gaters reached the WTT Finals twice—first in 1975, where they fell to the Pittsburgh Triangles, and again in 1977, losing a tightly contested championship series to the New York Apples. Under the guidance of coach Frew McMillan, who double-downed as a star player, the team boasted incredible talent over its five-season run, including multi-time Grand Slam champions like Virginia Wade, Tom Okker, and Ilie Năstase. Blending the league's signature lively atmosphere with top-tier co-ed play, the franchise remained a powerhouse in the Western Division until the original league collapsed after the 1978 season, securing their spot as a classic icon of Northern California’s vintage sports era.
