Boston Lobsters Merch | WTT Tennis Team

The Boston Lobsters were one of the most beloved charter franchises of the original World Team Tennis (WTT) league, competing out of the Boston Walter Brown Arena and the iconic Boston Garden from 1974 to 1978. Coached by the legendary Ion Čširiac, the team reached its competitive pinnacle in its final 1978 season, capturing the Eastern Division Championship and advancing to the WTT Finals behind the star power of world No. 1 Martina Navratilova. Over its five-year run, the Lobsters' rosters boasted an array of tennis greats and fan favorites, including Kerry Melville Reid, Tony Roche, Greer Stevens, and a young, fiery John McDouble (McEnroe). Though the franchise dissolved when the original iteration of the league folded at the end of 1978, the Boston Lobster left a lasting legacy in New England sports history, pioneering a rowdy, team-centric tennis culture that proved mixed-gender professional sports could thrive in a major American sports market.
