The Dallas Chaparrals were a professional basketball team who were a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA) and were active participants in the league from 1967-73. The idea for their nickname arose from the Chaparral Club, where the owners met to discuss team business. One of those owners was Robert Folsom, a Dallas businessman who would later go on to become the future mayor of the city. Although the Chaparrals failed to generate a significant amount of local interest, the team played an important role in the ABA's infancy and were a precursor to the NBA's San Antonio Spurs. Facing declining attendance figures at the Dallas Convention Center Arena and increasing financial instability, the team was leased and moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1973.
