The San Diego Sockers played in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1978-1984. Prior to that, they had operated as the Baltimore Comets ('74,'75), San Diego Jaws ('76), Las Vegas Quicksilvers ('77). Although the Sockers failed to win a league championship, they qualified for the playoffs and had deep run six out of seven seasons.

After their attendance plunged in 1983 and 1984, the Sockers discontinued play in the NASL and continued playing and thriving in the Major Indoor Soccer League until the 1991-92 season. The San Diego Sockers team colors are blue, yellow and white.
