The Portland Timbers played in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1975-1982 with their most successful season being their inaugural season, when they lost in Soccer Bowl '75 to the champion Tampa Bay Rowdies. The Portland roster was heavily composed of players who had been signed from English teams. In the 1978 season, the Timbers lost in the Conference Championships to the eventual champion New York Cosmos.

By 1982, the Timbers began to resemble a dead tree which was rotting from the inside out. The writing had been put on the wall when ownership had hinted this may be the team's final season. After the '82 season, the franchise was shuttered with attendance dropping well under 10,000 per game for the first time in their history. The Portland Timbers team colors are timber green, gold and white.
