The Philadelphia Atoms were a member of the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1973 until 1976. The Atoms have the distinction of winning the NASL League Championship in their first season of 1973. However, the franchise failed to maintain their success, failing to qualify for the playoffs in the next three seasons.

After the 1976 season, where attendance had dropped to about 6,000 fans per game, Philadelphia ownership decided to close shop and cease operations. Atoms' goalkeeper Bob Rigby had the honor of being the first soccer athlete to grace the cover of the magazine Sports Illustrated in 1973. Philadelphia Atoms team colors are blue, light blue and white.
