The New York Cosmos were a very influential member of the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1970 until 1985. The Cosmos enjoyed success both on the field and at the gate during their sixteen year tenure in the league. They signed international superstars Pele, Giorgio Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto and Franz Beckenbauer.

From 1972 until 1982, the Cosmos won five NASL Championships and were Runner-up once. Their high profile players and dominance on the field helped grow the game of soccer in North America, until it started to decline in the early to mid 1980's. New York Cosmos team colors are green, navy, yellow and white.
