The Montreal Manic were members of the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1981 until 1983. Although the team averaged over 23,000 per game in their opening season, by 1983 attendance figures had dropped below 10,000 per game. A rather sudden loss of interest in the team by the local faithful eventually led to the franchise's demise. In their final season of 1983, the Manic shocked the New York Cosmos by eliminating them in the first round of the playoffs. Montreal was defeated by the Tulsa Roughnecks in the next round, which signified a wrap for team operations.
