The California Surf played in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1978 until 1981, achieving three playoff appearances, but losing the 1st Round all three times. After the 1977 season, the St. Louis Stars relocated to Anaheim, CA and rebranding as the California Surf. After finishing with a losing record for 1981 NASL season, the Surf failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time while playing on the West Coast. California head coach Peter Wall had resigned seven games into the season, and shortly after the season, team ownership announced it was closing shop.

California Surf team colors are light blue, dark blue, lime green and white
