The Atlanta Chiefs played in the North American Soccer League from 1968-73 and then again from 1979-81. The Chiefs were NASL Champs in their first season of 1968 and runners-up in 1969 and 1971. The Atlanta Chiefs organization will forever be remembered for introducing the game of soccer to the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Chiefs' first coach, Phil Woosnam of Wales, would later become NASL commissioner from 1969 to 1982, a time when the league would experience sustained growth.
