The Carolina Lightnin' were a professional soccer team based in Charlotte, North Carolina, playing in the American Soccer League (ASL) from 1979 to 1983. Founded by businessman Bob Benson and coached by English soccer legend Rodney Marsh, the team played its home matches at Memorial Stadium and was the first professional soccer club in the Carolinas. The Lightnin' won the 1981 ASL Championship by defeating the New York United 2-1 in front of a record attendance of over 20,000 fans, which helped grow the sport immensely in the region.
