The Carolina Cougars professional basketball team played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) from 1969 to 1974. Originally founded in 1967 as the Houston Mavericks, the franchise relocated to North Carolina in late 1969. They played in multiple cities across the state, including Greensboro, Charlotte, and Raleigh, making them the first regional franchise in the ABA. After the 1973-74 season, the franchise was sold for $1.5M to a group of New York businessmen and relocated to St. Louis, becoming the Spirits of St. Louis.
