North American Soccer League (NASL) was a professional soccer league from 1968 to 1984, popularizing the sport in the United States and Canada. The NASL attained substantial attention by attracting major international stars such as Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, and Johan Cruyff, which assisted in elevating the profile of soccer in areas dominated by other team sports like baseball, basketball, and American football. During its peak in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the NASL featured teams from coast to coast in major North America cities.

The league was known for its innovative rules aimed at making the game more palatable to American audiences, such as a 35-yard offside line and shootouts to determine a winner after ties in regulation time. The NASL was both praised and criticized for its changes to the traditional game, highlighting the league’s willingness to implement experimental measures to build a fan base. The league was ultiumately torpedoed by financial instability and overexpansion, eventually leading to its decline and dissolution after the 1984 season. 

The NASL’s legacy lives on as an important pioneer which laid the groundwork for the awareness and growth of professional soccer in North America. It was integral in establishing a foundation for the Major League Soccer (MLS), which launched in 1996 and has since become the premier soccer league in the region. The NASL is remembered nostalgically by many soccer fans as a brash, albeit unsuccessful experiment which exposed the world’s game to North American audiences.
