The American Soccer League (ASL) was a semi-professional or regional league which operated for half a century from 1933-1983. Most of the teams were located in the Northeastern part of the United States, focusing on cities with a robust immigrant population. This league is often referred to as the "second ASL", following in the footsteps of the the original American Soccer League (1921-1933), which had closed shop due to financial challenges.
The ASL featured many teams which had solid ties to immigrant ethnic communities such as the Irish, Germans, Italians, Greeks, Scottish and Polish. Providing a sense of pride and identity for immigrant populations, the clubs were an essential fulcrum within their local communities. The ASL began to lose relevance and market share when the North American Soccer League (NASL) emerged in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The ASL had been reduced to a paltry six teams when the league finally folded after its final season in 1983.
