The Virginia Squires were a professional basketball team which played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) from 1970-76 and are known for being the first pro team for basketball great Julius Erving. They played their home games in multiple Virginia cities, including Norfolk, Hampton, Richmond and Roanoke. Originating play in 1967 as the Oakland Oaks, the franchise relocated and was rebranded as the Washington Caps in 1969. The following year in 1970, the team once again relocated to Virginia, where they were known as the Squires. The ABA cancelled the franchise on May of 1976 for missing a league payment, excluding them from the ABA-NBA merger due to their financial instability and their non-viable regional model of playing home games in multiple Virginia cities.
