San Francisco Pioneers were a groundbreaking female pro basketball team which played in the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) from 1979 to 1981. Actor Alan Alda was a notable investor in the franchise, which holds the distinction of being the first women's pro basketball team in San Francisco, California. The Pioneers played their home games at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium, quickly becoming a model WBL franchise for financial stability and fair treatment of players. However, the team's performance declined after their inaugural season, and the WBL ceased operations after the 1981 season. Despite their brief existence, the Pioneers played an integral role in the history of women's pro ball, laying a path to future leagues such as the WNBA.
