The Spirits of St. Louis were a professional sports team that played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) during the 1974–75 and 1975–76 seasons. They were based in St. Louis, Missouri, and were the third reincarnation with the first being the Houston Mavericks and the second the Carolina Cougars. In May of 1976, low attendance at the St. Louis Arena led to financial instability, as the franchise planned to relocate to Salt Lake City, merge with the Utah Stars and become the Utah Rockies. The deal fell through when the Utah Stars went belly up and closed shop. No doubt, their financial difficulties played a vital role in the Spirits being excluded from the eventual ABA-NBA merger.
