The San Diego Sails were a professional sports team which briefly participated in the American Basketball Association (ABA) during the 1975-76 season. The Sails were the final act of the ABA franchise which initiated play as the San Diego Conquistadors in 1972. The team was saddled by a large $2M debt by previous ownership, eventually folding in November 1975, just 11 games into the season. Reportedly, one reason the Sails were excluded from the ABA-NBA merger was due to Los Angeles Lakers owner Jack Kent Cooke not being amicable to competition in Southern California.
