The New Jersey Americans were one of the charter franchises of the ABA, participating in the league’s inaugural 1967-68 season. The team had serious problems with their Teaneck Armory home venue, which led to the franchise relocating in midseason to New York and rebranding as the Nets. Although short-lived, the Americans did lay the groundwork for the iconic New York Nets, who later would join the NBA in the merger.
