The Miami Floridians were a professional franchise which participated in the American Basketball Association (ABA) from 1968-72. Originally established as the Minnesota Muskies in 1967, the franchise relocated to Miami in 1968, taking on the Floridians name and establishing a presence in South Florida's pro sports landscape. Despite the team's financial and attendance struggles, they contributed to the early development of professional basketball in Florida. Essentially, the Floridians laid the groundwork for future NBA expansion in the Miami area, culminating in the establishment of the Miami Heat in 1988.
