The Houston Mavericks were an original charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA) from 1967 to 1969. During their tenure, the Mavericks suffered through a couple of losing seasons, struggling to draw adequate attendance figures at the Sam Houston Coliseumto keep the franchise afloat. In 1969, the Mavericks were subsequently sold and moved to North Carolina, rebranding as the Carolina Cougars. However, the franchise did pave the way for the city's future professional basketball success, with the NBA's Houston Rockets arriving in town from San Diego in 1971.
